Supermarket Sweep

January 18, 2012 5:45pm

I love playing ‘Supermarket sweep’ with my young cousins, and they absolutely love it too. It makes supermarket shopping so much more interesting and less monotonous. The basic premise of the game is that you give the children a list of the items they need to find. Each child receives their own list, each list bearing the same number of items. The children must then proceed to race to collect all the items on their list first. And you? You simply sit back and wait. They have fun and you get to chill out, what could be better?

Ever since I got hold of Tesco discount codes, I have been playing this game incessantly with the children as I can afford to put more items on the list. It has got to the extent of making three trips to the supermarket per week. It’s fantastic, the children absolutely love the game and it makes shopping fun rather than a chore. If you have any young children with which to play this game, I certainly recommend it to you.

Lego for Adults

January 16, 2012 4:11pm

It has often been said “You never get too old to play with Lego”, and many Afol’s (Adult fans of Lego) will testify to this. As it is such a vastly creative endeavour, there is simply no end to the possibilities that can be built with Lego. As a result, Lego can be used by all age groups, it’s merely the sophistication of the design that will alter. It’s surprising then that so few Lego campaigns have targeted adults! Whilst many movies have been converted into Lego set themes, there has yet been a Lego theme which has been appropriate for adults. Many see Lego as a young person’s endeavour, but one would be surprised at the number of adult fans. There is a huge niche in the market for a Lego themed set which is targeted for adults.

Perhaps there has been no set specifically aimed at adults because adults have a greater reign over what they design as so do not require tailored sets. For example, the Lego ninjago is absolutely fantastic for children and teenagers, but an adult would probably prefer merely the building blocks in order to be able to move beyond the theme and create whatever tickles their fancy.

Giclee Prints

January 13, 2012 4:59pm

The term giclee is derived from the word “gicler” meaning “to squirt”. Giclee refers to a method of creating fine art prints. Jack Duganne, a printmaker, coined the term giclee. He wanted do describe the ink jet technology without being associated with the negative connotation “ink-jet” brings to fine art works. Artists use giclee printing when making reproductions of their original artwork or photography. Traditionally making reproductions are made using the four-colour offset lithography process. Whilst cheaper in the long run, an artist wanting only to duplicate a couple prints would have better luck with giclee printing. This is because with the four-colour offset lithography process the initial cost is created when making the printing plates. As copies are produced the cost is distributed throughout each print. Giclee printing however allows the artist to duplicate the print whenever he or she needs. Giclee printing is also advantageous because it allows the artist or photographer to choose the details of the reproduction such as the color and substrates that they print on. Plot of Brideshead Revisited

January 9, 2012 12:51pm

In Brideshead Revisited, by Evelyn Waugh, the drifting away of Sebastian leads to his friend Charles’s own estrangement from Sebastian’s family, the aristocratic Marchmains. Charles marries before fathering two children yet he becomes cold towards his wife who is subsequently unfaithful to him. Charles eventually forms a relationship with Sebastian’s youngest sister, Julia, who had been previously married to the Canadian business man, Rex Mottram. The marriage of Julia to Rex Mottram had been a sore spot for Julia’s mother as it had been a Church of England marriage.

Julia and Charles together plan to divorce their spouses in order to marry each other. Lord Marchmain returns to Brideshead however, throwing a spanner in the works. Terminally ill, Lord Marchmain has returned to his ancestral home in order to die there and receives his sacraments there. Lord Marchmain’s return to faith on his deathbed leads Julia to realize she must not enter into a sinful marriage with Charles. The book does indeed have a sad ending as the couple never get together in the end, they do not enjoy a union such as PCI/DSS does.
